The construction work that began last October on the Nemunas River Island is gaining momentum. The main building structures may already be seen in the excavated area. One may also see the rectangle of the swimming pool and the ornaments of the SPA area that are close to the Žalgiris Arena.

The swimming pool equipment is already on the construction site

The CEO of Conresta, the company that is building the swimming pool, Lukas Laukaitis, pointed out that the building structures are currently undergoing intensive concreting works. After that, the structure will be sealed, i.e. the facade and roof will be installed, which are necessary for the installation of the pool’s engineering systems and interior finishing.

Vigimantas Abramavičius, head of the Construction Management Division of the Kaunas Municipality, added that the swimming pools and spa area of the water sports centre have already been concreted, and this can also be seen in the bird’s-eye view photos on the portal. Preparations are being made for concreting the basement overlay and flooring, and a large part of the technological equipment of the swimming pool has been brought in, which is to be installed before concreting the overlay.

L. Laukaitis confirmed that the installation of the beams, that are of unique size for Lithuania, has been completed. The beams were installed in their positions according to the project.

‘The works have been carried out very smoothly and consistently. The last step to be done is to fill the composite beams with concrete. This is going to be yet another stage that requires knowledge and skills, as the beams must be filled completely. This work will be carried out in parallel with concreting works to be done on the covering,’ explains the CEO of Conresta.

The wall of the Žalgiris Arena is to be demolished

For some time now, media representatives entering the Žalgiris matches through the doors – that are difficult to open – have been able to notice hints of construction inside the arena as well. The arena will be connected to the new pool via a 10-meter-wide tunnel, which will require dismantling the wall structures of the existing Žalgiris Arena and installing a passageway.

‘Looking at the prospects, during the championships planned to be held in the swimming pool under construction, a prefabricated swimming pool will be built in the Žalgiris Arena, intended for the athletes to warm up, thus, a spacious access from the Žalgiris Arena to the swimming pool building is necessary,’ said L. Laukaitis.

He also noted that in order to maintain the highest quality, certain works had to be paused due to extremely low temperatures this winter and also due to high amounts of precipitation. Right now, however, everything is going as planned and the works will be done in a timely manner.
